Phantom watched as she seemed to come to the realization that death was definately a possibility. And, as she had shared with him earlier, she didn't really understand this war. He'd hate to think she'd die for something she didn't believe in. She was a bright mare, he could see this, even after only a short time of conversation. He was glad he had paused to talk with her, rather than just turning the other way, as he did with most equines when he crossed their pathes. He had finally had an opening to ask for her company, and now, she had been silent for a long time. There was a lot to consider, he supposed. This was the life she had been shown since she was a foal. But he wanted to show her a new, better life. He hoped she would decide to come with him.

At last, the mare voiced her concern. So, she was seriously considering his offer. This, in itself, was rewarding. He thought he heard in her voice, too, a hint of eagerness to accept. Perhaps this question was just a precaution, but he still felt the need to give an answer that would satisfy her need for knowledge. "You may think you are safer within a herd, because of their numbers, yes?" Phantom raised his head up high, his eyes sparkling with hope. "As a loner, there are none that hunt you, so you will not feel the need for a herd." He gave a nod. "Once you have come to realize this, you will already know that as a lone horse, you are much safer." He relaxed his muscles, so that he could look her in the eyes. He was a bit taller than her, when standing up straight. He exhaled hard, and he could see his breath in the cool air. It was obvious that he was passionate about ending the war, and turning just one horse's head away from the herds would be a major accomplishment to him. He gave her a deep, promising look, hoping that she would choose to go with him.

The mare sighed. That wasn’t what she was scared of at all. But he had some truth within his words, and she already felt a little bit safer. She pawed the ground impatiently. Magic didn’t want to mention what her fear actually was; she didn’t want to offend him and be left to live this life of war. She stared off into the distance, thinking of a way to word her concern, with out angering her new ally. And You’ll keep me safe? She whispered, her foal like voice long gone, and replaced with that of a young concerned mare.

Magic lowered her head, gazing intently at the dehydrated ground. The war did this, she thought. She ran her hoof along the burnt up grass, watching as the dust arose and surrounded her ebony foreleg, turning it a musty shade of grey. What a world we live in, she thought quietly. She returned her gaze to the stallion, waiting for his response. Was she safe with him?

Phantom thought he saw her eyes light up with his explaination, but also, there was confusion. Perhaps he had taken the question in the wrong context. He tilted his head slightly, as if willing her to go on. If it was something she really needed to ask, she would clarify, he supposed. Phantom simply observed as she pondered what she should say next. He shifted his weight, and flicked his tail to rid his hide of mosquitoes. They really were pests. He didn't have much time to think about the itches bites appearing on his pelt, for she had voiced another question. She was concerned about her safety. Ah, he saw now. He was a complete stranger after all; could she trust him? Truth was, of course she could, he would never give his word without meaning it. But he had to figure out a way to get her to see this. Or at least give her some sort of idea of it, so that she'd go with him and get to know him better.

"You have my word." He said in a strong, confident voice. Even she could see that he did not lack in the size or muscles department. And he was wise as well, ooh, triple threat. His eyes conveyed his complete sincerity in these words. "If you so choose to come with me, I will guard you with my life." It was a forward vow, he knew, but it was also the truth. Phantom would rather die than see another come to harm. Especially a bright young mare such as she. And if she was to be his roaming buddy, that gave him even more reason to keep her safe. He kept eye contact with her, his cold purple hues now looking warmer than ever. Silence. It was her turn once more.

The mare hesitated, any one could pledge their word, but words meant nothing. She decided with a feeble heart that the only way he could prove himself was with action. And the only way for action, was to give him a chance. She stared blankly at the ground, weighing out the pros and cons. I think… she wavered. I think I will join you Of course she was frightened. She was putting her life in his hands, so to speak. She pawed timidly at the dry grounds. But don’t forget, You gave me your word! Her voice now some what presumptuous. She took a step towards him pushing herself to look taller. If you hurt me… she whispered Don’t forget, I will still have my allegiance with the darks. I’ll let that fall, only when I know I’m safe she huffed. She watched him carefully, awaiting his response. Hoping she was still welcome on his endless journey.

The silence was killing him. He had expected her to take her time in making this choice, but it seemed like it stretched on forever. At last, she spoke. His auds perked. She said she would join him on his journey to nowhere. Well, wasn't this exciting! Phantom had never pictured himself having a companion on his roamings, let alone a young mare. He had to admit, even he would have thought twice about joining a strange stallion such as he. But he knew, since it was himself he was talking about, that he would keep to his words. Words were nothing next to actions. He would have to wait for a time where he could prove himself to her. Only then would she truely be able to trust in his words.

Her eyes took up a cold threatening glare as he watched her. She seemed to stand up taller, trying to look intimidating. Standing next to Phantom, it wasn't working very well, but he knew what she meant to accomplish, and he would not hurt her pride. He let his head fall just a little, so he didn't look so tall. To her, it would look as though he was submitting, which in a way, he was. Yes, she meant business, and he was ready to accept whatever threat he was in for. So, she was going to keep her alliance with the Darks until she fully trusted him. It was completely understandable. He only hoped that he would have a chance to rpove himself to her soon, so that she could be rid of the whole taking sides thing. It was poison to a bright mind.

Phantom brought his head back up, so that his eyes were level with hers. He gave her a hard, sincere stare. "I understand completely, miss Magic." He held her gaze, his sincerity flowing through his eyes, and he only hoped she could see this. "I will keep to my word. And once I have proved myself, you will keep to yours, and drop your alliance with the Dark side. Correct?" He wanted nothing more than to rid this young mare of the unecessary stresses of being divided. Soon, she would see this. She had already taken the crucial step in commiting to leaving. Now, it was up to him to prove to her that this life was better. And boy was he going to do just that.

Its short, but its early, and I'm tired, so here you go!

She pawed the ground impatiently. Anxiety over took her as she awaited his response. A sudden rush of fear entangled her mind. She wasn’t afraid of the beast himself, no. She was scared of what was to come. Everything was new, as if she was only born yesterday. If he still allowed her to accompany him, she’d be facing the life she never even dreamed of, and if he changed his mind, she would be forced to return to the dark lands; the lands she no longer felt compelled to fight for.

At last he answered her vague threats. He understood! She listened carefully as he went over their agreement. She nodded slowly. Correct. She shook her head, her silky mane flying in disarray. Excitement flowed through her veins. Finally she was able to explore this vast world. See beyond the fiery swampy death lands. She snorted and pawed the ground once more, letting her restlessness be known.
